Polka Dots

The term Polka Dot most likely comes from the Polka Dance that was popular in mid-nineteenth century.

Some believe that it is derived from Czech word pulka for half referring to short steps in the dance. Others believe it is from Czech word Polka meaning Polish Woman.

The dot pattern was fashionable at the time, hence, the name Polka Dot. It began to evoke the lively and cheerful nature of the dance.

In 1940s Polka Dot was back in trend. Frank Sinatra’s song Polka Dots and Moonbeams became popular. The song had been performed by many other singers including Bob Dylan in his 2016 album Fallen Angels.

In 1960’s DC comics introduced a new villain, Polka-Dot Man, who fought Batman. He fights by creating weapons from polka dots on his outfit.

Today, during the Tour de France, a white with red polka dot jersey (also known as the King of the Mountains jersey) is awarded to a rider with the most mountain points i.e. a cyclist with the best time to climb to uphill.

Polka Dots and Moonbeam

song lyrics:

A country dance was being held in a garden
I felt a bump and heard an “Oh, beg your pardon”
Suddenly I saw polka dots and moonbeams
All around a pug-nosed dream

The music started and was I the perplexed one
I held my breath and said “May I have the next one?”
In my frightened arms, polka dots and moonbeams
Sparkled on a pug-nosed dream

There were questions in the eyes of other dancers
As we floated over the floor
There were questions but my heart knew all the answers
And perhaps a few things more

Now in a cottage built of lilacs and laughter
I know the meaning of the words “Ever after”
And I’ll always see polka dots and moonbeams
When I kiss the pug-nosed dream
